The Global Seed Vault has been dubbed the doomsday vault, which conjures up an image of a reserve of seeds for use in case of an apocalyptic event or a global catastrophe. India had sent its first set of seeds way back in 2008 when the vault became operational, but it was not until in April of 2014 that India sent its first major contribution of seeds to the Global Vault. ICRISAT Hyderabad, has contributed 20,000 samples of seeds from India, of which the most important were seeds of the Pea crops, which are unique to India. It is the farthest north you can fly on a commercial airline, and apart from the nearby town of Longyearbyen, it is a vast white expanse of frozen emptiness. It’s located in the snowy heights of the Himalayas. But probably many of you just don’t know that India too has its own doomsday vault. Temperatures inside the vaults are kept between the ranges of -18 to -20 degree celsius and seeds are sealed inside Aluminium foil packages that are further stored inside Storage boxes that are made of high quality heat repelling material. The vault preserves a wide variety of plant seeds so as to protect them in case of an apocalypse. The plant-floor is divided into three different sections that each store different kinds of seeds at different temperatures that have been brought from different parts of the world. The 400ft tunnel leads into the storage facility from the entrance. The vault is designed to store 100 million seeds from over 100 countries in the world. The 11,000 sq ft facility stores about 6.5 million seed samples to protect the world’s food supply from epidemics, disasters or wars that might wipe out irreplaceable seed varieties. Svalbard Global Seed Vault is a global seed bank situated on the Norwegian island of Spitsbergen, located only 1300 kilometres away from the north pole. There is a facility in Norway which is making use of Cold Chain to do exactly that. We need to make sure that plant species are preserved, come what may. What happens to our plant species in such a condition? How do they survive such adverse situations? It is the need of the hour to innovate and find solutions to plant safety and protection. ![]() Not only is the pattern of precipitation becoming more and more uncertain, but it is also being feared that such irregularities have increased the chances of a natural calamity or a disaster to occur. ![]() With rising temperatures and changing global weather patterns, there is a greater threat posed to plant and animal life on the planet than ever before. By the beginning of the 21st century we had already lost 6,800 of them. In the 1800s, United States grew 7,100 varieties of Apples. ![]()
